Leaders of the coalition parties in the government, including Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, have lost their popularity among the masses, SANA news agency reported.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudary is the most popular personality in the country while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif tops the list of most popular politicians. Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, on the other hand, has managed to increase his popularity.
According to a Gallup International survey regarding the popularity of political and administrative personalities, Prime Minister Gilani scored a negative 29 points, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain earned a negative 41 points, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain received a negative 40 points and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman a negative 28 points.
Awami National Party’s (ANP) Asfand Yar Wali topped the list, earning a negative 48 points.
According to the survey, the chief justice scored 16 points, although he lost eight points compared to his score in the past. Meanwhile, Nawaz ranked first among the most popular politicians with 12 points but he lost four points compared to his score in the last survey. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif stands next to his brother with 10 points. The PTI chief earned five points, managing to rise one point higher compared to his score in the last survey.
Shahbaz also ranked as the most popular chief minister with 27 points, making him the only one in the positive list. The Balochistan chief minister gained a negative 30 points, while the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister earned a negative 20 and the Sindh chief minister a negative 22. The survey results also concluded that the vote bank for various parties has largely changed, and as a whole.

Nawaz Sharif had been given two chances but he could not deliver. We should not waste any more time of our nation to select PMN(N), PPP, instead we should give a chance to Mr.clean Imran Khan.
Imran should get Aitzaz Ahsan, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Marwi Memon, Mushahid Hussain, Ansar Barni and other good people in his party.
All the best Imran, we the youth of Pakistan are with you.
i think nawas sharif is bettwr than others
I agree with Gallup Survey that Nawaz Sharif is the most popular politician in Pakistan. I hope he will continue serving the people of Pakistan. All of my best wishes are for him. Allah bless Nawaz Sharif.
Nawaz Sharif is the last hope for Pakistan. I wish he becomes Prime Minister of Pakistan. Allah bless him. Thanks. Asifa Khan
There is no doubt Nawaz Sharif is a true Pakistani. He always served Pakistan putting his maximum efforts. May give him progress, health and prosperity. Aameen.
@rehmat: Valid point.
@ghulam ali: On second thoughts 2000 is too small a sample for 190 million poor souls. You need much bigger sample size. New York Times sample size on key issues is as big as 3500.
@basharat: Good point.
To all commentators:
Each one has valid points, hence raising issues on both sampling size and the question the enumerator is asking. How he\she asks and what is the sample question's desired meaning and objective determines the response and the results. This should be noted by @Ghulam Ali.
@ghulam ali: Thanks for your comments. My mistake in typing just 9% instead of 95% confidence level. I was sitting at an American airport for my flight while posting my comments hence my error. I understand statistics and did not want to become too technical on ET. Sample size and enumerator's question is key to get accurate and authentic response. Three to five situations or personalities should be sample survey's object of evaluation, not Pakistan's entire federal and provincial cabinets, its members and heads of parties coupled with SC Judges. These types of questions would confuse the educated Britons let alone the poorly educated souls with low literacy standards of Pakistan. Therefore even with 2000 sample size statistical confidence level will remain low due to sampling errors arising from responses to questions that may never be understood in the first place. Plus differences between urban and rural sampling itself is a hurdle for accuracy. I hope you understand what I am saying. It would be great it Gilani through sampling 2000 individuals a fortnight before election could accurately predict the outcome. Then I would raise my hat to you. Otherwise, your sampling is questionable. Just see the comments made by others on your sample responses. They too like me have an issue with your results.
Since the CH who is not a political person was surveyed, I wonder why the article does not mention the COAS. Is it possible that he too like the others got negative marks and theGallup people did not dare to publish that?
How much Mian Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan, and other politicians are popular it will be seen at the time of general elections. As far as the chief justice is concerned, yes, he has become a popular figure in a certain segment of society. Express Tribune´s survey result shows that majority of the participants have polled against him, that means; the literate people do not support him much. In Zafar Ali Shah case the present chief justice was co-author of the judgment which declared the military take over of 1999 to be inevitable and need of the time. Mian Nawaz Sharif had been quarrelsome with Ishaq Khan, Farooque Leghari, General Jahangir Karamat, Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, General Safdar Nawaz and many other which created many constitutional stand stills during his stay in power. It is learned many politicians having strong constituencies, are likely to join T I, If it so happens, Imran Khan may emerg as next prime minister.
I think people underestimate the good work done by Shahbaz Sharif. That's why Lahore is so much more stable and developed than other places in Pakistan. I think that Pakistan as a whole would benefit from the vision of Shahbaz Sharif if not necessarily Nawaz Sharif. Nawaz Sharif, Zardari, Musharraf and even Imran Khan are getting a bit tiresome as yesterday's men. Shahbaz Sharif is Pakistan's future.
@Billoo Bhaya: With due respect to your worthy opinion, allow me to say that your claim about the sample size needed for accurately surveying the Pakistan population is not well-founded. In this regard, before reading further, please do have a look at this public service website: http://www.surveysystem.com/sscalc.htm#one
Just try the 'sample size calculator' there. For a population of 180 million, if you want a to have to be 99% sure (confidence level) that your results have a margin of error of only 3% (confidence interval), the sample size comes out to be 1,849. That's a little less than the 2,000 sample which this survey seems to be based on. This calculator is based on a formula which is very widely recognized in all quantitative research, not just in opinion polling circles. So it's not something which Dr. Gilani has come up with to justify his own predictions. Even accountants and engineers rely upon it.
So, as far as the science of statistics goes, you claim that we need a sample of 50-60 thousand is not well-founded. But that's ok. None of us is born an expert or a scholar. We learn. I really hope that you won't get angry at this honest comment and, instead, would take it positively.
Should include Dr. AQ Khan.
This survey must have been carried out by Abbagee and company
move out the way the lions are coming.
WHat has the Chief Justice done to get such popularity? The country is still open to the dogs
@Aadersh: Not in the rural areas
Public perception …. hmmm …. The Said three are probably last at list of being popular then …
Perhaps this poll was organized in Raiwind only...Ask any sane person in Pakistan & his/her answer would b Imran Khan for next election...
We need to stop whining and step out in the next elections. I support Imran Khan cux we ought to choose the best from the worst ! PTI will only sweep elections if we support the Tehreeq rather than jus the face of IMRAN KHAN !
God Bless Pakistan ..
Musharraf is the most popular leader.
@Billoo Bhaya: Bhaya I support Imran Khan too but blind optimism will lead you nowhere. Realistically Imran can hope to manage a bunch of seats and be a junior partner in a coalition government IF he wants to side with anybody.
Come election time - provided the elections are fair and not ballot stuffing - PTI and Imran Khan will comfortably sail into office. These Gallup results are up the creak. Gallup couldn't forecast one correct election in Britain in the last 50 years, where they are a big organization, how can they determine popularity of Pakistani politicians with 2000 people being asked. They need to ask 50-60,000 people for accuracy within 5% confidence level. All BS.
