LAHORE:

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Lawyers’ Forum will observe Black Day on Wednesday (today) to condemn General (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s deposing of Nawaz Sharif’s government on the day in 1999. A seminar will be held today at Lahore High Court Bar Association in this regard. Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Rana Mashhood Khan, Education Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman and MPA Zaeem Qadri will address the seminar.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said October 12, 1999, was the darkest day for democracy in the history of the county.

He said the country would have progressed economically and had no longer relied on foreign assistance had democracy been allowed to nurture.

Sharif family had left the country for Saudi Arabia after General Musharraf’s October 12, 1999, coup.

The coup was followed by Nawaz Sharif’s decision to replace Musharraf with then  Inter-Services Intelligence Director-General Lieutenant General Ziauddin as chief of army staff.
