LONDON: Supreme Court Bar Association president, Asma Jahangir is recovering from an emergency operation on her appendix in London.

According to reports, Jahangir had to be rushed to hospital after her appendix (a vestigial process that extends from the lower end of the caecum and resembles a small pouch) burst. She had been discharged after a successful surgical procedure.

Jahangir is a prominent human rights activist and a respected lawyer. She successfully ran for the SCBA in October 2010 coming in with an impressive record in advocating human rights and pushing for gender equality in Pakistan.

She also served as the head of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan for an extended period of time before her election to the SCBA presidency.

Jahangir was in London to attend a ceremony at the Westminster Abbey to mark the commencement of the new legal year in England and Wales featuring Presidents of Bar Associations from 43 countries. Being a Commonwealth country, Pakistan’s legal structure still emulates the standing British legal framework and marks the commencement of the legal year along with other Commonwealth countries.
