SUZUKA:

Sebastian Vettel vowed to take nothing for granted as he closes in on a second world title despite needing just one point to become Formula One’s youngest ever back-to-back champion.

The 24-year-old German, the only driver to complete every race this season, needs to finish just 10th at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix to take the crown for a second time with four races remaining. McLaren’s Jenson Button is the only driver who can stop his Red Bull rival securing the title at Suzuka, but the Briton, winner of the 2009 title, would have to claim the season’s final five races without Vettel scoring a point.

“I feel capable of scoring the point I need, but I still have to do it,” said Vettel, adding he will not approach the race any differently. “With the races we’ve had it should not be a big problem, but it’s over when it’s over and not before.”

I’m driving better than ever: Button

Meanwhile, Button has an eye on next season as he gears up for this weekend’s Grand Prix.

The 31-year-old, who signed a new multi-year contract with McLaren, acknowledges the title is gone. But rather than stew on that, Button is taking the positives from the season.

“I thought I drove well through my championship-winning season, especially the first part,” he said. “But I’m definitely a better driver now with the experiences I’ve been through. We’re so close to fighting with Red Bull, yet so far, and I think it’s good to have the continuity going forward.”
