Time to speak up

Letter October 06, 2011
For how long are we going to tolerate the religious bigotry by the self-proclaimed defenders of our faith?

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to your report on the protests by several religious parties on October 6 against the death sentence given to Mumtaz Qadri for the murder of Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer.

Enough is enough. For how long are we going to tolerate the religious bigotry by the self-proclaimed defenders of our faith? Who gave them the licence to represent our religion in the first place?

One of the parties that took part in the protests, is the Jamaat-i-Islami, whose chief only recently said on a television talk show that women who are raped should not speak out against their oppressors but keep quiet. As usual, the government played the role of a silent spectator and allowed these protests to take place. No wonder people are being butchered in Quetta since taking someone else’s life seems to have become the easiest thing in this country. As an ordinary Pakistani, I urge all the leaders who are against such crimes to speak up.
