The above direction was given by the Prime Minister while chairing a special emergency meeting at the Prime Minister house here on Monday on the current acute energy shortfall in the country.
The Prime Minister also directed the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources to ensure restoration of fuel supply to the power plants including KAPCO and HUBCO so that they can generate electricity to ease the electricity shortage in the country.
Full restoration of fuel supplies to these two plants will generate additional 2,000MW electricity.
A report sent to Prime Minister Gilani revealed that Pepco is facing a loss of around Rs42.3 million every hour due to electricity theft and non-payment of dues.
The meeting reviewed energy conservation measures, and Minister for Water and Power was directed by the Prime Minister to hold consultation with the provinces in this regard.
The Prime Minister also directed the High Powered Committee consisting Syed Naveed Qamar, Minister for Water and Power, Dr Asim Hussain, Minister for Petroleum, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission, Dr Nadeemul Haq and Acting Governor State Bank of Pakistan and headed by the Finance Minister, Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh to submit recommendations in a Special Cabinet meeting to be convened soon aimed at the resolution of unscheduled loadshedding in the country.

Initially it was announced that power crisis will be settled next in 36 hours. Now after 26 hours its further 48 hours.....
@Mannaman: Brother accept a reality. You say they did nothing i say they did alot and everyone knows. just take the dollar rate of Musharraf's time and compare it now. Just think how many times this govt went to IMF. NAWAZ was their ally also in a time when they were also trying to prolong and stabilize their rule and no developmental work. Moreover Abdul Qadir Khan has personally said in an interview with kamran ( video available on youtube) that the atomic research was supported the most by General Zia shaheed and it was also completed under his command. He also said that he himself advised Z.A.bhutto to start nuclear research when he was on vacation. After one year when he came for another leave there was no work done on it. Please watch the interview. The F-16s which forms the backbone of Pakistan Air force..who bought them?
@Ahmer Ali: Moreover dam construction is also not a matter of days. These democratic people were the main hurdle to dams too. They protested against Kalabagh dam aalso in his regime. But what did they do themselves...????
@rehmat: Dear brother, dams can give us a cheap source of electricity as well as effective flood control. Therefore his vision was good. If they let him construct the dams, many problems would have solved. but what to say i think we need democracy and no other thing. its a pity that people still do not realize the need for dams. Look at India, its even trying to make dams on our water also and we cant even utilize our own.
@rehmat: Well still he was much better than these democratic people. at least he did not have a fake degree and did very well in many fields. Moreover building dams is necessary for flood control as well as for cheap electricity. If dams are built, it would solve many many other problems also.
@Jehangir Why don't you tell PEPCO hotline about 'bijli chor'?
@Jibran What after long march? do we have an agenda, or just like when we wanted to make Pakistan, we stopped following any.
Pakistan was made in the name of Islam; We tried to Bluff The Almighty and started enjoying our lives, as if there is no hereafter and no accountability. We wanted to get rid of Indian & British masters, but made few within ourselves.
The principle of Islamic law were not implemented, till now when people have started coming on media and refuting Islamic principles alltogether;
Shouldn't we be prepared for Allah's wrath?
According to me this is all crap ... power shortage, calling urgent meetings are all DEKHAWA... can any one tell me that few months back in Karachi there was two hours consecutive load shedding going on with gap of every two hours that has made all Karachities life miserable and suddenly in the month of Ramzan it was announced that that full throttle load shedding will be reduced by one hour three times a day....
they are just making us fool and there is only a planning of IMF to control people and government in the country to rule us.... when china can offer us power plant with 2 rupees per unit why cant we just accept their proposal... it is just like that they want all of us to come out on street do hungama and later on to accept it whatever is happening with us and carry on with our lifes...
where are two weekly holidays???????????????
If the current Paki dispensation is reelected in the next elections....then even the faintest glimmer of hope will vanish........
No one in tribal areas pays any bill, even they don't have meters. Most of the big land lords, Khans, Vaderaas, government officials, WAPDA employees, businesmen don't pay electric bills or pay very little. Most of the households of no go areas in cities and villages do not pay anything. Only poor, middle class and honest people pay their full dues, but the electricity is so expensive that they are changing their sides and joining corrupt and dishonest classes. Therefore situation will never improve. Soon we will see ,when current will come for few minutes just to remind us that we live in 21st century.
@rehmat: Zia and Musharraf with absolute power could not either build dams or control the power theft and corruption, just prolonged their own power. With FRIEND like Nawaz Sharif in opposition and TTP behind him how do you think the government can solve power issues.
Holding the previous minister for Water & Power accountable for this mess could be step one.
Ironically they wasted few more watts of electricity over this useless conference, which I could have used for my office work.
@Adil: "I still remember that General Pervez Musharraf is one of his speech pointed out the fact that Pakistan needs at least 5 more dams till 2016. They could not only be used for power generation but also to meet water requirements and prevent floods. While Musharraf had vision, the current government does not know what to do"
The problem is not that there is not enough generation capacity. The problem is that the power generation companies are not being paid by the people using electricity and so they in turn do not have the resources to generate electricity. More power plants wil not solve problem or electricity theft which is the root cause. Musharraf did not resolve that issue in the 9 years he was in power either.
I wonder how these politicians got billions when in my life span they were terribly poor. One gentleman's father could not afford a bicycle. His sons are billionaires.Did the money come from heavens, obviously not. They stole money from us.Now they say we have a problem of circular debt.Their factories are run on stolen electricity which belongs to the people of KP.Their Palaces and factories belong to us and we will take our money from all of them.We can't wait any longer. They are trying to confuse the public and create other issues to divert the wrath of poor people, but you can't fool the people all the time.
PPP always comes up with promises of Roti, Kapra and Makkan. 1st thing PPP govt do is snatching all of these three through their corruption.
People should prepare for a long march and force the the fedral and provincial to step down
Can't we play a role to minimize power theft. If somebody is stealing, i am sure the neighbors somehow come to know about it. All big cities have this problem and i must say that common people are stealing it as well along with big fish. We are not sincere ourselves.
Vision less PPP. Dark Pakistan
Power shortages have begun and many of us have accepted it as part of our lives. Soon, we will be forced to live with fuel shortage as well. You will see only cars of the super rich plying in the city. We will accept that also as a price we have to pay for standing by our friends like Haqqani brothers.
But what is going to create havoc in the society is the food shortage that is likely to arrive by Mar 2012 by which time some sort of sanctions from the US is likely to be in place. Foreseeing this, I have already started talking to my immigration lawyers. What about you?
PS; Malaysia has a terrific 'second home' immigration scheme. You need to open fixed deposit with them for USD 80,000. And you can settle down there !!
The shortage is over 8000MW now. What will 2000MW do?
@Jehangir, If the state can take loans from WB, IMF and not pay back, if the super-political-rich can take loans from the bank , embezzle them and not pay back then why should the common man be discriminated against and be required to pay for electricity ?
way to be proactive GoP.
Why not All Parties Confrence on Electric shortage could u please PM sahib
I still remember that General Pervez Musharraf is one of his speech pointed out the fact that Pakistan needs at least 5 more dams till 2016. Where are my 2days off ??
It should not only be a meeting, but solid recommendations and decesions are required to be done by Prime Minister Sahab. Now nation is facing its toughest energy crises of all the times and needs preventive measures immediately.
I know several houses in Islamabad including some of them belonging to rich and middle classes who steal power & some who dont pay bills for the last several years. Am sure many people here who`ll post comments also do the same. Ofcourse, the individual houses who steal power in quantity terms will be far lesser than those from small industries and corporates who dont pay bills at all. If we dont pay our billls correctly, how will Govt provide power? All fault is not with the Govt alone.
PPP Govt. creates IPPs in earlier term to get double commission from IPPs and from oil companies. Now thermal power jinni becomes out of hands with no finances to sustain oil supplies in PPP's current term and they just want to pass time to complete the term and say good buy to the people of Pakistan.
Print currency notes...Security Printing Press should work triple shift...... That is the solution that PM has.
Did someone explain to him, that circular debt in reality is bad debt that is circulating due to power theft and subsidies.?.
