'Female parliamentarians being selected, not elected'

Ejaz-ul-Haq's counsel Mian Ghafar on Thursday said female parliamentarians were being selected, instead of going through an election on their reserve seats, in accordance with an article in the 18^th amendment.

During hearings of petitions against the amendment in the Supreme Court, Ghafar said people are represented through their chosen representatives in a parliamentary form of system.

In response to this, Justice Javed Iqbal observed that all female parliamentarians on reserved seats would have to go home in case the court declares the article unconstitutional.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry said the Supreme Court will meticulously examine the challenge to the amendment brought in the article.

The lawyer also challenged the amendment under which party chiefs have the power to dismiss parliamentarians.

Zuhair | 14 years ago | Reply Absolutely spot on. I am sick and tired of watching these women parliamentarians screaming on talk shows how they have come through the electoral process. It is a shame that in the so called democracy, 90 percent of our women members get in through selection and not election. So much for equality.
