‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ gets 3D release on Meta VR glasses
DNEG collaborated on the film’s 3D conversion, marking Meta’s first such partnership with a Hollywood studio

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is set to reach audiences beyond cinemas, with Lionsgate partnering with Meta to bring the upcoming film to the technology company’s virtual reality glasses.
The collaboration will see the Francis Lawrence directed prequel converted into 3D for its theatrical release before becoming available on Meta VR glasses in spring 2027. The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on November 20, 2026.
According to Deadline, the project marks the first time Meta has partnered with a Hollywood studio to convert a feature film into 3D. The conversion was completed in collaboration with DNEG, the Oscar winning visual effects and animation company.
The partnership also signals a new distribution opportunity for Lionsgate, which plans to announce additional feature titles for Meta VR glasses and their availability at a later date.
Meta unveiled the glasses at its Connect 2026 event. The device features a 5K Infinite Display, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos spatial audio and IMAX Enhanced technology. The glasses reportedly weigh approximately 100 grams.
The move gives audiences another way to experience the latest instalment in the hugely successful Hunger Games franchise. The five films released so far have earned more than $3.3bn worldwide, according to the report.
Sunrise on the Reaping is based on Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name and takes place decades before the events of the original story, following a young Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games.
The film is directed by Lawrence, who previously helmed several entries in the franchise. Its theatrical release is expected to be one of Lionsgate’s major releases for the Thanksgiving period.
Although the partnership focuses on 3D film viewing rather than artificial intelligence, it brings together a major Hollywood studio and a technology company investing heavily in immersive entertainment.
