GILGIT:

Gilgit-Baltistan celebrated its 79th Independence Day on Sunday with traditional enthusiasm and patriotic spirit, as ceremonies and celebrations were held across all ten districts to commemorate the region's liberation from Dogra rule on November 1, 1947.

The main ceremony was held at Chinar Bagh Martyrs' Memorial in Gilgit, where Governor Syed Mehdi Shah hoisted the national flag in the presence of Chief Minister Amjad Hussain, the Force Commander Northern Areas, senior civil and military officials and families of martyrs. Police contingents presented a guard of honour, while the governor, chief minister and Force Commander laid floral wreaths at the memorial and offered fateha.

Addressing the gathering, the chief minister described November 1 as a landmark day symbolising freedom, sacrifice, unity and patriotism. He paid tribute to the local heroes who overthrew Dogra rule despite limited resources and subsequently decided to accede to Pakistan.

He stressed that unity, good governance and collective efforts were essential for the region's development, identifying education, healthcare, employment and equal opportunities for women as key priorities. He also paid tribute to the armed forces for their sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.

Governor Shah said the freedom enjoyed by the people was the result of the sacrifices of their forefathers. He urged citizens to protect this historic legacy and contribute actively to the region's development.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif separately congratulated the people of G-B, paying tribute to the freedom fighters. The president highlighted the region's contributions to Pakistan's defence and development, while the prime minister reaffirmed federal support for economic development, institutional reforms and improved public services.

The prime minister also highlighted development initiatives, including the 16MW Naltar hydropower project, the 100MW solar programme, four Danish Schools, laptop distribution and the proposed Maqpoon Das Special Economic Zone.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also extended greetings, describing the day as a symbol of courage and national unity. First Lady Asifa Bhutto Zardari congratulated the people, particularly women and youth, and called for greater opportunities for their empowerment.

A 21-gun salute, military parade, flag-hoisting ceremonies, national songs and student performances marked celebrations across the region, with people reaffirming their commitment to Pakistan's unity and G-B's prosperity.
