Looking toward the East has always been a key strategy for Pakistan to enrich its economic base. The tremendous success achieved by ASEAN member states in less than two decades of proactive engagement is a landmark achievement. Singapore, in particular, stands out as a prime example of self-reliance. The city-state has scaled the heights of success through political stability, economic diversification and an unwavering reliance on entrepreneurship. Pakistan is right to resolve once again to benefit from Singapore's success story by broadening economic partnerships and tapping new avenues in higher education, technology and banking.

The recent visit of Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan to Islamabad coincided with the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations. The fact that this is the first high-profile visit since 2005 hints at a collective oversight. Yet, it is never too late; the visit offers a vital opportunity to synchronise priorities and share experiences in governance. Ranked 1st in the 2026 Index of Economic Freedom with a score of 84.4, Singapore operates one of the world's most competitive economies. It is time for Pakistan to move past rhetoric and learn from the city-state, which is set to assume the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2027.

While Pakistan has been a Sectoral Dialogue Partner in the league since 1993, Singapore's leadership could help elevate it to a full dialogue partner. Likewise, bilateral trade of approximately $1.2 billion falls well below potential and requires professional hands to undo past policy stagnation. Furthermore, the suspension of PIA and Singapore Airlines' operations since 2007 and 2010, respectively, continues to dent tourism, trade and regional interactivity.

While Balakrishnan expressed interest in learning from Pakistan's disaster management experiences, Islamabad can benefit heavily from Singapore's expertise in AI, IT and banking. Crucially, Singapore's strides in building the world's safest and cleanest city offer invaluable blueprints for a country navigating rapid urban population growth and security challenges.
