RAWALPINDI:

The Rawalpindi Cantonment Board's Food Control Cell has launched a major crackdown on the sale of substandard, adulterated and expired food items, as well as unhygienic conditions and poor sanitation.

Those responsible have been fined Rs1,486,500, while warnings have been issued that future violations will lead to criminal cases and the sealing of food centres.

The food control cell is continuing strict action against those preparing and selling food to citizens in different cantonment areas in violation of hygiene standards, using adulterated and substandard ingredients and maintaining poor sanitation.

The Cantonment Board's Food Control Cell collected 298 food samples. After the samples failed laboratory tests, several cases were referred to the court of the special judicial magistrate.
