Another deadline, same ordeal
.

Another deadline has been announced for Karachi's long-suffering University Road, where the K-IV water augmentation project has become yet another example of administrative inefficiency and poor planning. The 2.7-kilometre pipeline installation between Nipa Chowrangi and Hassan Square, originally scheduled for completion in four months, has now been pushed to December 31.
For commuters who have endured years of disruption, the latest extension offers little reassurance. University Road has remained in a state of disrepair for nearly five years owing to the prolonged construction of the Red Line BRT corridor. The addition of K-IV pipeline works has compounded the misery, leaving motorists navigating narrowed roads and businesses suffering from restricted access. More concerning is the repeated damage to existing utility infrastructure, which has disrupted water supplies in surrounding residential areas. Why were these obstacles not adequately identified and addressed before excavation began? Utility mapping and interdepartmental coordination are fundamental requirements of infrastructure planning, not unforeseen complications that can indefinitely justify missed deadlines. Uncertainty caused as a result is particularly unacceptable when millions of residents are waiting for relief. The Sindh government must recognise these delays carry consequences far greater than contractual inconvenience.
The new deadline must therefore be accompanied by a credible execution schedule and clearly assigned responsibilities. Coordination between the water authorities, utility providers and Red Line contractors must be strengthened to prevent further excavation and disruption. More importantly, the government should investigate why earlier timelines proved unrealistic and hold those responsible for avoidable delays accountable. Karachi cannot continue to function as a permanent construction site where deadlines are revised without consequence. An undertaking as important as K-IV deserves urgency and timely execution. Its completion must become an administrative obligation.
