Anne Hathaway’s ‘Verity’ arrives on digital platforms this week after box office success

Anne Hathaway’s psychological thriller Verity is arriving on digital platforms this week after earning $162.7m worldwide at the cinema.

The film, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel of the same name, will be available to purchase or rent from Tuesday, October 27, according to the release information cited by Forbes. Viewers will be able to access it through Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies and TV.

Directed by Michael Showalter, Verity stars Hathaway as Verity Crawford, a successful author whose career takes a disturbing turn. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to complete Verity’s books.

When Lowen arrives at Verity’s remote estate, she discovers troubling notes that appear to reveal unsettling details about Verity’s relationship with her husband, Jeremy, played by Josh Hartnett. As Lowen investigates, she begins to question what is real and what may have been invented.

The film opened in cinemas on October 2 and attracted audiences despite a mixed critical response. It received a 31% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 186 reviews, while its audience score reached 71%.

Its box office performance proved considerably stronger than its critical reception. Verity earned $71.5m in North America and $91.2m internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $162.7m. The reported production budget was $40m, before marketing and distribution expenses.

The adaptation is the latest film based on Hoover’s work to perform well commercially despite criticism from professional reviewers. Her previous adaptations include It Ends With Us, Regretting You and Reminders of Him, which also attracted substantial cinema audiences.
