GUJRANWALA:

A newlywed woman was shot dead inside a car on the day of her wedding reception in Gujranwala, allegedly by a man who had wanted to marry her, police said.

The incident took place near Samanabad Chungi in the Gulshan Colony area, within the jurisdiction of Aroop police station, on October 24. Saba married Sufyan on October 23, and the couple's walima reception was held the following day.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the couple were returning home after the reception when two men on a motorcycle intercepted their car.

One of the suspects, identified as Sarfraz, allegedly opened fire on Saba at close range, hitting her in the chest and abdomen.

She was rushed to hospital in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries.

The complainant alleged that Sarfraz wanted to marry Saba and attacked her after she refused. A case has been registered, while both suspects have fled and remain at large.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident, reportedly shows two motorcycle riders waiting on the road as the couple's car approaches.

The suspects then move towards the vehicle and stop it.

According to the footage, one of the men opens the car door, prompting a woman to get out and run for safety.

The attacker then allegedly opens fire repeatedly at Saba, who remains inside the vehicle.

The car's driver is seen getting out and lying on the ground, apparently attempting to protect himself from the gunfire.

The suspects are then seen fleeing on their motorcycle while firing shots.

The footage reportedly captures the suspects' faces as they escape, which investigators may use to help identify and trace them.

The Crime Control Department (CCD) has registered a case and launched an investigation. Regional police officials said efforts were under way to arrest the suspects soon.
