KARACHI:

A young man was injured in an alleged police shooting in Nazimabad No 2 on Saturday night after police personnel reportedly mistook him for a robber, according to the victim and his family.

The family alleged that the personnel took the injured man, Shorim, to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and left him there before disappearing. He was later shifted to JPMC, where he is receiving treatment.

The victim and his relatives further alleged that the personnel harassed them after the shooting and took away their motorcycle and mobile phone. The District Central police have yet to issue an official account of the incident.

According to Shorim, he was riding his motorcycle through a street near Nazimabad No 2 when he heard the sound of a 125cc motorcycle approaching from behind. As it was dark and he became frightened, he attempted to move ahead, prompting the alleged police personnel following him to open fire. One bullet struck him.

Shorim said the personnel seated him on their motorcycle while he was injured and called someone, claiming that they had apprehended a robber. They allegedly accused him of throwing away a weapon before taking him to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and leaving him there.

Meanwhile, IG Javed Alam Odho has sought a detailed report from the AIG Karachi regarding the incident.
