Picnic turns fatal as truck rams car

KARACHI:

A 19-year-old man was killed and four others were seriously injured when a speeding truck rammed their car near Jamali Bridge on the Superhighway early Sunday morning. The victims were returning from a picnic at a farmhouse when the accident occurred in front of Mandi House within the jurisdiction of the Site Superhighway police station.

The deceased was identified as Muhammad Sufyan, son of Muhammad Yasir, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Society in Malir who was undergoing an apprenticeship at Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). The injured were identified as Abdullah, Ahmed, Bilal and Abdul Rehman.

According to the duty officer at the Site Superhighway Industrial Area police station, 10 friends had travelled to a farmhouse for a picnic in two cars. Five of them were travelling in the car that met with the accident while they were returning.

Rescue officials said the crash was apparently caused by overspeeding. A speeding Shahzore truck struck the car from behind, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to crash into the footpath. The truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene after the accident.

Sufyan's body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities, while the injured were taken to Dow University Hospital for treatment. Police moved the damaged car and the truck to the police station and launched a further investigation into the incident.

Food delivery rider killed

A 28-year-old food delivery rider was also killed after a speeding car hit his motorcycle near the Matriculation Board Office in North Nazimabad in the early hours of Sunday, police said. The police detained four youths travelling in the car and registered a case against the driver, identified as Azaan, according to PS North Nazimabad SHO Adeel Ahmed.

The deceased, Imtiaz, was a resident of Banaras Town in Orangi Town. A friend of Imtaiz alleged that the occupants of the car were under the influence of intoxicants. He also claimed that he was assaulted when he reached the scene.

Imtiaz's brother said the deceased had been working as a food delivery rider for the past six years and was due to get married next year.
