RAWALPINDI:

Preparations are under way for the inauguration of the Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR), with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expected to formally open the project on October 28 at the Banth Interchange on GT Road, the starting point of the route. The road is expected to be opened to traffic following the inauguration.

The 38.3-kilometre project has been completed along its main route, including four interchanges at Banth, Chak Beli Khan, Adiala and Chakri. Installation of the tolling booth system is expected to be completed before the opening.

The tolling system has been transferred to the Punjab Ring Road Authority (PRRA) under the One Network company arrangement, with the authority responsible for its operation and maintenance.

The final interchange at Thalian, designed as a broad-based interchange, will be completed at a later stage. For the time being, the Ring Road has been connected to the motorway route at Thalian without an interchange.

The Punjab Development Working Party (PDWP) has approved the third revised PC-I for the project, valued at Rs50.4 billion, which also includes the construction cost of the Thalian broad-based interchange.
