Christina Applegate has returned to her MeSsy podcast after a seven-month absence, revealing an emotional and unexpected update about her health. The Dead to Me actress, 54, disclosed that doctors recently told her she does not have multiple sclerosis (MS), despite having lived with the diagnosis since 2021.
Applegate shared the news during a new episode of the podcast, which she co-hosts with fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler. The pair released back-to-back episodes on Tuesday, October 20, with Applegate opening up about the medical revelation and the emotional impact of discovering that her diagnosis may have been incorrect.
“She came into my room and said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS,’” Applegate recalled through tears. She explained that she did not experience the relief others might have expected, as the news left her struggling to understand what had happened to her health over the past five years.
The actress stressed that the change in diagnosis has not improved her physical condition. Despite being told she does not have MS, she continues to experience debilitating symptoms and requires a wheelchair to attend medical appointments.
“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of a sudden I’m better,” Applegate told Sigler. “I haven’t gotten better, Jamie! If anything, I’ve gotten worse.” She added that she was back at square one as her doctors investigate what has been causing her symptoms since 2021.
In a subsequent episode, Applegate described the emotional toll of the news, revealing that she had experienced a deep depression while processing the revelation. She also expressed uncertainty about her identity within the multiple sclerosis community, where she had spent years sharing her experiences and supporting others living with the condition.
The actress said she felt as though she had let people down after becoming a prominent voice for those affected by MS. Her diagnosis had given her a framework for understanding her daily struggles, she explained, making the sudden change particularly difficult to process.
“I had a reason. I had a f---ing reason as to why my day sucked every day,” she said. “And now I don’t have a reason and it’s very unnerving and it’s very confusing for me.”
Applegate was originally diagnosed with MS in 2021 and has since spoken openly about her health challenges through interviews, social media and her podcast. She and Sigler created MeSsy to discuss their experiences navigating life with the condition, offering candid conversations about the physical and emotional difficulties associated with their diagnoses.
The pair announced a temporary break from the podcast on March 31, 2026. Applegate was subsequently reported to have been hospitalised in Los Angeles in late March, remaining under medical care for several months. Her representative declined to discuss the details of her treatment at the time, citing her long history of complicated medical conditions.
In April, Applegate thanked fans for their support, saying she was focusing on her health. She returned home in August following her lengthy hospital stay, according to reports.
Despite the new information about her diagnosis, Applegate's health difficulties remain unresolved. She described her situation as “the same game with a different name”, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding her symptoms and the further medical investigations ahead.
The actress, known for Married... with Children, Anchorman and Dead to Me, has continued to speak candidly about her health in recent years. Her latest podcast appearance marks a significant new chapter in that journey, as she and her doctors work to establish what has been happening since her original diagnosis.
