Mental health crisis

Pakistan's first nationally representative mental health survey has revealed a quiet but serious crisis gripping the nation. Evaluating nearly 18,000 adults across all four provinces between 2018 and 2022, the landmark study paints a deeply concerniXng picture of the nation's health landscape. The data shows that 32 per cent of adults - nearly every third - are living with a diagnosable mental or behavioural disorder; and 38 per cent have experienced a psychological disorder at some point during their lifetime. The breakdown of specific conditions highlights a widespread trauma: PTSD i.e. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder affects one in five adults (20%); depression is suffered by more than one in 10 individuals; and suicidal thoughts are experienced by 6 per cent.
That this escalating crisis warrants priority focus goes without saying. Addressing a crisis of this magnitude requires immediate, structural interventions led by the government in partnership with the private sector. The foremost steps that need to be taken are: 1) Psychological services must be integrated into basic rural health centres and basic healthcare infrastructure to work around the severe shortage of specialised psychiatric facilities. 2) Lady health workers, school teachers and community leaders should be educated in basic 'psychological first-aid' to enable early detection and timely support at the grassroots level. 3) Government-backed digital counseling apps should be introduced to provide immediate, cost-effective crisis intervention, particularly for those battling acute depression or suicidal thoughts. And 4) Public education drives should be launched to help dismantle the intense social stigma that prevents individuals from discussing their emotional struggles or seeking professional help.
Mental health must no longer be treated as a secondary concern. A sustained, well-funded national strategy is urgently required to secure a healthier, more resilient future for generations to come.
