The Mummy: Book of the Dead is the official title of the next instalment in the popular action adventure franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Universal Pictures confirmed the title on October 15, 2026, while reaffirming the film’s planned theatrical release date of October 15, 2027.

Fraser and Weisz are returning as adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell. They will be joined by returning franchise cast members John Hannah and Oded Fehr, alongside Michael Johnston, Numan Acar and Kevin J O’Connor.

Fehr’s return as Ardeth Bay has added to speculation about the possible return of Imhotep, the central villain played by Arnold Vosloo in the first two films. However, no official confirmation has established whether the character will appear in the new movie.

The title references the Book of the Dead, an ancient text featured in the original 1999 film. Within the franchise, the book contains spells associated with resurrecting the dead and summoning supernatural warriors. Its connection to the earlier story has prompted fans to consider whether the new instalment could revisit elements that helped establish the series.

Directing duties are being handled by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo known as Radio Silence. David Coggeshall is writing the screenplay, while franchise veteran Sean Daniel is producing.

Early set photographs have also offered glimpses of Fraser and Weisz in costume, giving fans an indication that their characters will reunite for another adventure. Fehr previously shared a first look at his return as Ardeth Bay.

The upcoming film follows The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, released in 2008, which did not feature Fehr’s character. Fehr later explained that Ardeth Bay had little reason to appear without Imhotep serving as the main antagonist.

Although the new title and returning cast have encouraged theories about the story, the plot remains under wraps. The Mummy: Book of the Dead is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 15, 2027.
