South Africa have named Matthew Breetzke in their 17-man squad for the second Test against Australia, with Kagiso Rabada in contention to return as the hosts seek to level the series.

Breetzke replaces Tristan Stubbs, opening the possibility of South Africa fielding an additional specialist batter when the match begins on October 18 in Gqeberha.

Ryan Rickelton will take over wicketkeeping duties, while left-handed batter Tony de Zorzi was not considered for selection as he continues his recovery from a left hamstring injury.

Rabada missed the opening Test as he recovered from a hamstring injury but is nearing a return to action.

South Africa lost the first Test by 214 runs in Durban and will look to bounce back in the second match, with the third Test scheduled for Cape Town from October 27 to 31.

Squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Marques Ackerman, David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Corbin Bosch, Gerald Coetzee, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Anrich Nortje, Dane Paterson, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, and Kyle Verreynne.

Series Schedule:

First Test: October 9-13, Durban (Australia won by 214 runs)

Second Test: October 18-22, Gqeberha

Third Test: October 27-31, Cape Town
