No fresh CCI nod needed for DISCOs sell-off

ISLAMABAD:

The Privatisation Division has informed a subcommittee of the Senate Functional Committee on Devolution that no fresh approval from the Council of Common Interests (CCI) is required for the privatisation of power distribution companies (DISCOs), as the relevant decisions taken in 2011 and 2021 remain in force.

It added that the CCI had approved the National Energy Policy on June 21, 2021, under Clause 5.9.4 of which the government would explore various privatisation options to improve the performance of state-owned enterprises.

Both decisions remain valid, the division maintained.

Referring to the legal status of the decisions, the division said the Law Division had reaffirmed in a letter dated Sept 25, 2026, that no fresh CCI approval was required for the privatisation of Discos in light of the council's 2011 decision.
