Fans react to Kacey Musgraves Columbus criticism during Dallas concert

Kacey Musgraves called Christopher Columbus 'loser' during Dallas show, prompting mixed reactions online

Kacey Musgraves criticised Christopher Columbus during a concert in Dallas, Texas, after asking the audience about Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Her remarks prompted mixed reactions online, with some viewers supporting the singer and others criticising her for discussing the subject during a performance.

The country singer made the comments at the American Airlines Center during her Middle of Nowhere tour. In footage shared online, Musgraves asked the crowd, “Yeah, that's right, on this day? What day?”

After the audience responded, “Indigenous Peoples' Day!”, she turned her attention to Columbus.

“Obviously [expletive] Columbus,” she said. “Literally the lamest person to probably ever exist. Like for real. What a loser.”

She continued, “What a loser Christopher Columbus, we hate you!”

Some social media users criticised Musgraves for expressing her views during a concert. One commenter argued that Columbus’s legacy was connected to the development of the United States, while another questioned whether the singer had studied the explorer’s history.

Others objected to entertainers discussing political or historical issues during performances. One viewer wrote, “Omg just shut up and sing girl nobody is there to listen to anything other than your songs.”

The comments also drew support from viewers who welcomed Musgraves speaking about Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Musgraves’s onstage comments came amid a separate public exchange with Kristi Noem. The dispute began after Noem responded to a post by Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, who had attended Musgraves’s Dallas concert.

Noem wrote that she would choose Ella Langley over Musgraves and Texas politician Ken Paxton over Talarico.

Musgraves responded with a reference to Noem’s account of shooting her dog, Cricket, which attracted criticism after appearing in her 2024 book.

“I don't think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you would have shot it,” Musgraves wrote.

Musgraves is continuing her Middle of Nowhere tour in support of her album of the same name, released on May 1 2026. The North American run is scheduled to conclude with two performances in Seattle on October 26 and 27.
