Guterres in Pakistan

Guterres lauded Pakistan's unflinching support for the Palestinian right to self-determination

Editorial October 08, 2026 1 min read

Pakistan's diplomatic contributions to global peace and security have been highly eulogised. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, on a farewell visit to Islamabad as he relinquishes his high office, commended the country's "pivotal role" in mediating between the US and Iran, and called on both parties to end the conflict and return to diplomacy. The tribute was unparalleled, as the world body chief went on to term the Islamabad MoU a "frame for future negotiations" while expressing hope that better sense would prevail to save the world from another impending catastrophe.

Guterres lauded Pakistan's unflinching support for the Palestinian right to self-determination and its role at the vanguard of the struggle against colonialism. He highlighted the broadened perspective the country brought to the august forum by championing multilateralism, noting that as an ardent proponent of UN reform, Pakistan has firmly opposed both the addition of permanent members to the UNSC and the retention of the veto power. Beyond these institutional stances, the country spearheaded the unanimous adoption of a landmark resolution against Islamophobia, successfully establishing an official commemorative day on the UN calendar. The top diplomat further commended Pakistan's humanitarian efforts in hosting millions of Afghan refugees while paying tribute to the deep sacrifices of Pakistani soldiers serving under the UN Blue Helmets in global conflict zones. Finally, he praised the critical diplomatic initiative that culminated in the adoption of Resolution 2788, a Pakistan-sponsored framework dedicated to strengthening multilateral mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Pakistan believes in collective wisdom at the world fora, and has opposed interventions and wars. By underscoring the importance of negotiation, mediation and preventive diplomacy, Islamabad has buoyed the role of the UN. As the world slips into a terrain of no-rules-based world order, it's time for the UN to assert its writ and work on the manifesto of making the planet a better place to live in by eradicating poverty, hunger and transgression of power-intoxicated states.

Salman | 3 weeks ago | Reply UN chief lauds Pakistan s pivotal role in mediating between US and Iran and Pakistan s spirit of engagement is front and centre on issues of peace and I salute Pakistan s leadership for helping create conditions for dialogue Nice words. But Mr. Guterres forgot to read his own UN s reports about Pakistan. The same UN that he leads has said this about Pakistan UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention Opinion No. 22 2024 The deprivation of liberty of Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi being in contravention of articles 3 9 10 19 20 and 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights... is arbitrary and falls within categories I II and III. And appropriate remedy would be to release Mr. Khan immediately and accord him an enforceable right to compensation The report also says his detention had no legal basis and appears to have been intended to disqualify him from running from political office and detention violates international law UN Committee Against Torture found a pattern of threats arbitrary arrests enforced disappearances and extrajudicial executions and specifically drew attention to the detention conditions of former PM Imran Khan and his wife noting restricted access to necessary healthcare UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Alice Jill Edwards in Dec 2025 said prolonged solitary confinement is prohibited under international human rights law and when it extends longer than 15 days it constitutes a form of psychological torture Imran Khan has been in solitary for months denied meeting with doctors family lawyers for almost a year. So which UN should we believe You take Nishan-i-Imtiaz President Zardari also conferred the Nishan-i-Imtiaz on Mr Guterres and you talk about Kashmir and Indus Treaty but you don t follow the UN s own order to release Imran Khan You want to be mediator for US-Iran and talk about voluntary safe and dignified returns of Afghans but you can t give a safe and dignified jail to your own former PM You tell Guterres that Pakistan endured immense suffering from terrorism but you create suffering by putting 250 FIRs at Attock and sealing Islamabad against your own people Guterres praising Pakistan for opening its doors to millions of Afghans is true for the people of Pakistan. But the government It opened doors for Afghans 40 years ago then resettled TTP in KP in 2022 without asking KP and now blames KP for terrorism. If you want to be a global mediator first follow the UN at home. Release Imran Khan immediately as your own UN Working Group ordered. Otherwise this photo-op with Guterres is just a cover-up.
