Sebastian Maniscalco’s SiriusXM comedy channel has sparked criticism from comedians who say the rebrand has reduced opportunities and royalty income for lesser-known performers.

Maniscalco partnered with SiriusXM in April to launch Sebastian Maniscalco’s Comedy Radio, a channel described at the time as “a 24/7 comedy destination”.

The service includes podcasts such as The Sebastian Maniscalco Show and We Got Company, alongside stand-up programming curated and headlined by Maniscalco.

The channel replaced SiriusXM’s Raw Comedy, which comedians said had provided regular exposure and income for performers outside the biggest names in stand-up.

On October 5, comedians including Patton Oswalt, Michelle Wolf and Matthew Broussard criticised the programming changes on social media and called for Maniscalco to reconsider the direction of the channel.

According to figures from Stand Up for Standup, the number of comedians on the channel’s “active roster” fell from 812 in April to 275 in September, a reduction of roughly 66%.

The report also stated that approximately 75% of plays are concentrated among the top 50 performers.

Among the comedians now receiving the most plays are Jim Gaffigan, Kevin Hart and Ricky Gervais.

SiriusXM told Vulture, “SiriusXM works together with our creative partners to program the best possible experience for our listeners.”

The company added, “The launch of Sebastian Maniscalco’s Comedy Radio introduced a new creative direction and a regularly evolving programming mix for the channel.”
