QUETTA:

Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti on Monday said the Balochistan government is taking practical steps to strengthen the local government system, deliver better municipal services and modernise the cleanliness regime across the province.

Addressing a ceremony at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority office where modern machinery was handed over to local government institutions under the Municipal Services Initiative 2026, the chief minister said all municipal committees are being equipped with contemporary equipment in the first phase. In the second phase the facility will be extended to union councils, smaller towns and rural areas.

Advisor on Local Government Nawabzada Baba Amir Hamza Zehri outlined the project features. Provincial ministers, Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan, senior secretaries, the Commissioner Quetta and other officials attended the event.

Bugti described the day as significant for Balochistan, particularly for those serving the public. "This is the first initiative of its kind under which municipal committees are being provided modern machinery so that cleanliness and municipal services in cities can be improved," he said.

He noted that Balochistan remains the only province where local government elections have been held. The current term ends in February 2027, after which fresh elections will be conducted. The government is fully prepared and will not offer any excuse for delay, he added. Post-election measures will further improve facilities and institutional performance at the municipal level.

Highlighting limited human resources against expanding needs, the chief minister said reliance on manpower alone is no longer viable.
