James Gunn has confirmed that he is already writing his next film while working on the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

Gunn revealed the update on Threads after a user asked whether he was ready to begin writing his next movie. “Already in it. I had to do something while I was waiting for the assembly!” Gunn replied.

The filmmaker also confirmed that the assembly cut of Superman: Man of Tomorrow has been completed. Gunn previously announced that filming on the superhero sequel had wrapped in August.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 9, 2027. The film continues the story established in 2025’s Superman, with David Corenswet returning as Superman.

The sequel will see Superman work alongside his adversary Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, as they face Brainiac, a superintelligent antagonist portrayed by Lars Eidinger.

Rachel Brosnahan will return as Lois Lane, alongside Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

Milly Alcock will also return as Kara Zor-El after appearing as Superman’s cousin in Superman and headlining Supergirl. Aaron Pierre will make his big-screen debut as John Stewart, following his introduction in the HBO Max series Lanterns.

Gunn is writing and directing the Superman films while also serving as co-head of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. The pair took over leadership of the studio in 2022.

Gunn previously discussed Safran’s role in overseeing DC Studios, saying, “Peter’s the best. He does everything I don’t do well. He keeps the ship steady, keeps everyone aligned, connects us with Jim Lee and the comics side and unifies departments that used to operate separately.”
