Yasir Hussain responds to Akif Ilyas's criticism

'I respect his opinion', says actor of makeup artist's comments

KARACHI:

Pakistani actor and comedian Yasir Hussain has responded to comments made about him by celebrity makeup artist Akif Ilyas, who recently discussed their past association and criticised Hussain's approach to comedy.

Ilyas, who has worked with several leading names in Pakistan's entertainment industry, spoke about Hussain during an appearance on Nadia Khan's show. According to Ilyas, Hussain used to contact him early in his career and ask him to help build his portfolio. He claimed that Hussain later mocked his appearance, style and friendships during a live awards show.

Ilyas also questioned the quality of comedy in Pakistan and said younger comedians could learn from performers such as the late Moin Akhtar, arguing that comedy should not come at the expense of others.

The comments prompted reactions online, with social media users debating Ilyas' remarks and Hussain's response.

Responding to the circulating clip, Hussain acknowledged Ilyas' contribution to his early career and said he had known him for many years.

Hussain said Ilyas had done his first photoshoot and had not charged him for it. He also described Ilyas as a highly talented artist with expertise in both makeup and photography.

"I have mentioned in almost every interview how much he helped me at the beginning of my career," Hussain said, adding that several other senior artists had also supported him during his journey.

Addressing Ilyas' recent comments, Hussain stressed that he respected his right to have his own opinion.

"Whatever he said in that interview may have been influenced by something he heard or experienced, I don't know. But that is his personal opinion, and I respect it," Hussain said.

He ended his response on a conciliatory note, saying: "I love you, Akif bhai."
