Pakistan’s bid for Asian Games squash gold ended in disappointment as Malaysia powered to a 2-0 victory in the men’s team final at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena in Japan on Friday.
The Green-shirts, who had produced an impressive run to reach the title clash, were unable to overcome a strong Malaysian side and had to settle for the silver medal.
Malaysia drew first blood through Ameeshenraj Chandaran, who recovered from losing the opening game to defeat Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal 3-1 in 41 minutes.
Iqbal made a flying start, taking the opening game 11-8, but Chandaran quickly turned the contest around. The Malaysian dominated the second game 11-3 before taking a closely fought third 11-6.
Chandaran maintained his momentum in the fourth game and closed out the contest 11-4 to put Malaysia ahead in the tie.
With Pakistan needing a victory in the second match to keep their gold-medal hopes alive.
Noor Zaman at one stage was leading 2-1. However, Yow Eain NG fought back strongly and lifted the fourth and fifth sets 11-4, 11-5 to seal much-needed victory for his side.
Earlier, Yow took a good start by winning the first game 11-8. However, Noor recovered immediately and won the next two games 11-6, 11-6 to get a lead.
Pakistan had entered the final hoping to cap their campaign with the top prize after progressing through the earlier stages of the team competition.
Meanwhile Malaysia also clinched the women’s squash team gold medal after defeating Hong Kong, China, 2-1 in the final.
Aifa Azman gave Malaysia a strong start, sweeping Tze Lok Ho 3-0 in the opening match.
Azman prevailed 11-9, 11-9, 12-10 in 36 minutes to put Malaysia 1-0 ahead in the gold-medal contest.
Hong Kong fought back to level the tie by winning the second match, forcing the title showdown into a decisive third encounter.
Malaysia held their nerve in the decider to seal a 2-1 victory and secure the gold medal.
