Talks in the shadows?

.

Days ahead of the PTI's march on the federal capital, reports of behind-the-scenes talks offer a welcome reprieve. PM's Adviser Rana Sanaullah's confirmation that "off-the-record" parleys are underway with the opposition has brought a collective sigh of relief. For those prioritising political stability and economic recovery, an immediate breakthrough is vital. The stakes could not be higher: the country is currently battling resurgent terrorism, while disrupted global supply lines have triggered skyrocketing fuel prices and persistent double-digit inflation. At this critical juncture, the last thing Pakistan can afford is institutional infighting and a perpetual standoff between the federation and the provinces. Ultimately, an amicable resolution of this essentially political dispute is entirely possible, provided that wisdom, pragmatism and fair play are allowed to prevail.

The political process, however, remains paralysed by personal egos. The six-party opposition alliance, TTAP, refuses to hold talks at either the Prime Minister's Office or the Speaker's Chamber. Moreover, the opposition leadership insists on meeting with Imran Khan in jail before engaging in any meaningful dialogue. Simultaneously, the federal government, wary of the K-P administration's plans to take to the streets on October 4, is reportedly mulling the imposition of Governor's rule in the province. Such a drastic step would only push the country deeper into an abyss of political decay and confrontation. Ultimately, sober minds on both sides bear the responsibility to intervene; the only viable way forward is an initial thaw to bridge the divide, paving the way for a structured and sustained dialogue.

An immediate and lawful breakthrough could be achieved by implementing the August 18 Supreme Court order. Granting the opposition its legitimate political space and engaging them in long-term dialogue on constitutional reforms - including restructuring an autonomous Election Commission, repealing recent legislation that is ultra vires to the Constitution and releasing political prisoners - presents a genuine win-win scenario for both sides.
