Faisalabad sets 1.834m-acre wheat cultivation target

A wheat cultivation target of 1.834 million acres has been set for Faisalabad division.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Divisional Wheat Committee chaired by Commissioner Faisalabad Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh.

The meeting directed the relevant departments to ensure adequate supplies of fertiliser and certified seed at fixed rates, as well as timely provision of canal water to farmers up to the fields.

The commissioner also called for promoting mechanical sowing methods and the use of super seeders to facilitate wheat cultivation.

He directed deputy commissioners to address farmers' complaints through district committees within 15 days and submit reports on the 100 per cent provision of canal water to the designated outlets.

Dr Sheikh said farmers using super seeders should be linked with other growers at the union council level so that more farmers could benefit from the technology.

He directed the relevant departments to complete the wheat cultivation target by November 20.

The commissioner said the provincial government would announce the wheat support price soon and expressed the objective of making Faisalabad Division the leading division in wheat cultivation in Punjab.

He said farmers' rights would be protected and announced that another meeting would be held after 15 days to review progress on the targets assigned to the deputy commissioners.

Director Agriculture Chaudhry Khalid Mahmood briefed the meeting, while representatives of the Kisan Board presented their suggestions. Deputy commissioners from all four districts of the division also attended the meeting.
