'The Kid Detective' series adaptation in the works at Hulu

Hulu is developing a series adaptation of the 2020 mystery comedy film The Kid Detective, with filmmaker Evan Morgan attached as an executive producer.

Morgan, who wrote and directed the original film, will executive produce the Hulu series alongside Alex Berger, who is also set to write. Rachel Kaplan of Abescon Entertainment will executive produce, while Jonathan Bronfman and Will Woods, who produced the film, are also joining the series as producers.

Adam Brody, who starred as private investigator Abe Applebaum in The Kid Detective, is not currently attached to the Hulu series.

The upcoming series will follow a similar premise to the original film. According to the project’s logline, the story centres on a former child detective whose career has faded after failing to solve a childhood murder. When a missing persons case brings the unresolved crime back into focus, he gets another opportunity to prove himself.

The original The Kid Detective, released in 2020, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received positive reviews from critics. Brody played Abe Applebaum, a former child detective attempting to navigate adulthood while taking on increasingly serious cases.

The Hulu adaptation is being developed with Berger as its writer and executive producer. His television credits include The Perfect Couple, Quantum Leap, Blindspot and The Mentalist.

Kaplan previously served as head of scripted television at Keshet Studios before launching Abescon Entertainment in 2020. Her producing credits include La Brea, The Baker and the Beauty and Lincoln Rhyme: The Hunt for the Bone Collector.
