Sombr has revealed the unexpected advice Taylor Swift gave him about dealing with online criticism as he navigates his growing music career.

In an interview with Elle Magazine, published on September 23, the 21-year-old singer-songwriter discussed Swift’s mentorship and how her guidance has reshaped his perspective on fame.

Swift hand-selected Sombr earlier this year to perform her songs “Cardigan” and “Dear John” at her Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Reflecting on “Dear John”, Sombr said the song’s lyrics resonated with him because Swift wrote it at around the age he was when he signed his record deal.

He described the connection as particularly meaningful given their experiences at similar stages of life.

However, it was Swift’s perspective on online hate that made a lasting impression. Sombr shared: “One of the best pieces of advice the legend has given me—The person I look up to most has given me. The amazing pop star. Is that if these hate comments go away, maybe you’re not at your peak anymore. I think it’s a privilege to be receiving these and rise above it.”

“Ever since she gave me that advice, it’s really changed my perspective and has helped,” he added.

Sombr also reflected on facing viral criticism as a teenager, admitting he once felt compelled to defend himself publicly.

He told Elle, “I wouldn’t respond now,” explaining that reacting to criticism can make situations worse.

Swift has publicly praised Sombr’s songwriting, calling him “the future” of the music industry and expressing confidence in his independent approach to making music.
