Amitabh Bachchan recalls how he and Jaya married just a day after deciding

Veteran actor says the couple skipped elaborate wedding plans and tied the knot the day after deciding to get married

Amitabh Bachchan has shared a surprising account of how his marriage to actress Jaya Bachchan came together with almost no advance planning. The veteran actor revealed that the decision was made so quickly that the couple tied the knot just a day after discussing marriage.

According to Gulf News, Bachchan spoke about his wedding while interacting with Kolkata contestant Aheli Roy on Kaun Banega Crorepati 18. During the conversation, Aheli asked him how he had convinced Jaya’s family before their marriage.

Bachchan said there was no lengthy discussion or elaborate planning between the families. Instead, he simply suggested to Jaya that they should get married, and she agreed. "I told Jaya one day that we should get married, and that was it - the decision was made", he said.

He added, "After the marriage was decided, Jaya ji must have gone and told her parents. We don’t even know what she must have said, but they agreed and came over. Then there was some discussion, and we got married the very next day".

Bachchan said the couple did not get caught up in the elaborate preparations that often accompany weddings today. Reflecting on the simplicity of their own ceremony, he questioned the need for lengthy planning and elaborate celebrations.

"Honestly, shouldn’t it be this way? Who wants to get into all that hassle of deciding the date, choosing what to wear, going here and there, making all these arrangements, having bands play and everything? There’s really no point to all that. We simply accepted that she was going to be my wife, and nothing could be more meaningful than that", he said.

The couple married on June 3, 1973, following the success of Zanjeer. According to Khaleej Times, they celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in June 2025.

The couple later welcomed two children, Shweta Bachchan Nanda and actor Abhishek Bachchan, and have remained one of Bollywood’s most prominent married couples.
