Kohat attackers had planned long siege

Initial investigations into the Friday terrorist attack on the Kohat Police Lines have revealed that the attackers were not merely planning a suicide bombing but had entered the compound with a plan to maintain a prolonged siege for several hours.

Sources said the terrorists were carrying hand grenades, sniper rifles, other weapons and explosives. After entering different parts of the Police Lines, they opened fire and used hand grenades during the attack. The FIR registered by police also mentions the use of firearms and hand grenades.

According to investigators, the attack began when an explosives-laden vehicle resembling a rickshaw was rammed near the Police Lines, causing a powerful blast. Immediately after the explosion, armed terrorists entered the compound and moved towards several key buildings.

Police said seven armed terrorists, including a sniper, initially entered the compound. Investigators said the attackers intended to use the explosion and gunfire to disperse police personnel and remain inside the compound for as long as possible.

However, police personnel continued to resist despite coming under heavy fire and suffering injuries, preventing the attackers from advancing as planned.

A senior police officer told The Express Tribune that the use of drone technology during the attack, along with the timely response by police and other security forces, played an important role in monitoring the terrorists' movement and conducting the operation.

According to the officer, the forces promptly brought the situation under control and prevented the attackers from spreading further inside the compound.

Officials said a prolonged exchange of fire continued after the terrorists entered the buildings. Later, operation continued for around 20 to 21 hours.
