Hours before the country’s political leadership were to come together in the wake of strained relations between Pakistan and the United States, the president, prime minister and the army chief met at the presidency.
In their meeting, President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, reviewed the current issues facing the country, presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said late on Wednesday. “The civil and military leadership discussed what they want to achieve from the All Parties Conference. We should all be on one page at this point in time,” sources privy to the meeting said.
The chief of army staff spelled out the stance the military would be taking during the meeting, sources said.
In today’s (Thursday) meeting at the PM House, politicians will prepare a coordinated response to the latest allegations levelled by the United States against Pakistan. However, most leaders appear sceptical of any positive actionable outcome, sources said.
The meeting is likely to trigger questions regarding the government’s reneging of promises, reluctance on implementation of parliamentary resolutions and the recommendations passed by previous such meetings.
According to officials from the PM House, 58 invitations have been extended to leaders from across all political parties, including those who do not have representation in Parliament. Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, who will be returning from the US, will brief the political leadership. In addition, director general (DG) military operation and DG ISI are also likely to brief the high-profile meeting.
While a significant majority of the political leadership will be attending the conference, Balochistan National Party (BNP) President Sardar Akhtar Mengal formally rejected the invitation. Mengal said that the government was responsible for the genocide in Balochistan and he would not sit with “killers” under any pretext.
“We did not get any instruction whether the conference would be an in-camera one or whether media would cover it,” said an official from the PM House.

Hi Hassan Tariq here,
I don't think this will work out unless we deport American Ambassador from Pakistan. But its appreciable because now its the time to show the American and our enemies what we are. America have to suffer what they will do. The Most patient Nation in the world is Americans but I am not talking about Govt. Public of American has a superb behavior for others. But the curse is only US Govt.
Thanks Hassan Tariq
Security at the meeting point should be impregnable, some people could be eying this as an opportunity. Secondly I just love it how they all unite when national trouble strikes us but apart from that no one can touch us cause we are not like afghanistan or iraq , cause we actually do have Weapons OF Mass Destruction !
PAK may have forgotten OBL incident but US still remembers it when recent Haqqani saga came to focus.
What is all party conference is going to conclude- that Haqqani and company are our "sons of the soil" as interior minister had said, so we cannot act against them?
PAK is not clear in her policy and she is not convincing the world and does not make any sense in her Haqqani position.
There are no US focused and PAK focused terrorist groups. They are all from the same stock of demagogues who have divided their territory for present situation. They will band together against PAK at opportune moment and at that time PAK will be fighting them, alone in PAK soil.
War Against terror or War for Terror????or may be war for resources..Please US stop thinking to conquer all world.USA should explain its policy.
@Omar: Sounds like a plan Omar. How about an alternative, slightly longer term plan . . . educate and empower the masses and create a just, tolerant and economically productive society? I know, the alternate option is too easy so let's just get the nukes out and show the world how much hardship we are ready to bear. Nice one Omar!
Pakistanis should show unity. There should be a very clear cut stand that any aggression by any invader will be a violation of International law. Pakistanis are tolerating drone strikes, which are already violations of international law.
Pakistan should respond all harsh, or punitive measures with the exact same harshness. Pakistan has already suffered enough and it's an insult to all Pakistanis that now it's going to be bombed by Americans. This is unacceptable. Pakistan should close all NATO supply routes immediately with no further delay. Pakistan should also prepare its air force with nukes for a swift counterstrike in the event of a full throttle invasion from the Western border.
