Rain swamps low-lying areas

RAWALPINDI:

Intermittent rain continued in the twin cities on Tuesday, inundating low-lying areas with up to two feet of water and disrupting traffic and routine activities in streets and markets. Up to one foot of floodwater accumulated on all major roads in the city, causing difficulties for commuters.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, 23 millimetres of rain was recorded in Saidpur, 44mm in Golra, 52mm in Bokra, 23mm at PMD, 41mm in Shamsabad, 27mm in Kacheri, 42mm in Pirwadhai, 37mm in Gawalmandi and 44mm at New Katarian The water level in Nullah Leh was five feet at Katarian and two feet at Gawalmandi.

On the directions of Deputy Commissioner retired Captain Nadeem Nasir, officers and personnel of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi, Civil Defence, Rescue 1122 and other relevant departments remained deployed in the field in view of the rainfall. Heavy machinery was deployed in low-lying areas around Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Murree Road, Dhoke Khabba, Circular Road and Sadiqabad to deal with any emergency.
