Two injured in axe attack amid local polls tensions

Two men were injured in an alleged clash over differences related to plans to contest local elections in Khohar village of Sarai Alamgir, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Saddar Sarai Alamgir police station when an argument between two groups over the election issue allegedly escalated into a confrontation.

Police identified the injured as 60-year-old Javed Iqbal and 24-year-old Adnan. According to officials, both men sustained serious head injuries after allegedly being attacked with axes.

They were shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.

Police said preliminary findings indicated that the confrontation was linked to local political and electoral differences.

Police sources said tensions between the two sides had reportedly increased after one group announced its intention to contest the local elections.

Relatives of the injured alleged that associates of a man identified as Waseem attacked the two men and struck them with axes.

The allegations could not be independently verified.

Police said statements from both sides were being recorded and investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to police, teams had been formed to arrest the suspects who allegedly fled the scene following the clash.

Officials said the investigation was under way and that the exact circumstances and motive behind the incident would be established after statements and other evidence were examined.

Police said legal action would be taken against those found responsible, while measures were being taken to maintain law and order in the area.
