Gina Rodriguez steps into the director’s chair for new boxing film

Gina Rodriguez makes theatrical directorial debut with 'House of Guerrero', a boxing film with producer Justin Baldoni

Gina Rodriguez is set to make her theatrical directorial debut with House of Guerrero, a new boxing film written by Bernardo Cubría and produced by Rodriguez alongside Justin Baldoni.

The film is based on an original story by Rodriguez and Cubría and follows a young fighter whose promising boxing career is cut short. After losing his chance to compete, he receives one final opportunity to return to the ring and fight for the life he once believed was gone.

House of Guerrero is being produced by Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla through 1Community, Rodriguez’s I Can And I Will Productions with Molly Breeskin, and Baldoni and Andrew Calof through Wayfarer Studios. Wayfarer Studios, 1Community, HarbourView Media Group and Clare LoCicero are co-financing the project.

The boxing movie will feature fight choreography from Clayton J. Barber, known for Black Panther and Creed III, and Eric Brown, whose credits include John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and The Matrix Resurrections.

Rodriguez said boxing has been part of her life since childhood and described the film as a story she has carried with her for years. She also highlighted the importance of showcasing Latino stories, families and heroes.

The project marks a professional reunion between Rodriguez and Baldoni, who previously worked together on the CW series Jane the Virgin. Rodriguez starred as Jane Villanueva, while Baldoni played Rafael Solano.

The film was first announced in 2021 under the title Guerrero, with Rodriguez originally attached to direct, produce and co-star alongside professional boxer Ryan Garcia. UTA Independent Film Group is handling worldwide sales for House of Guerrero.
