‘Lanterns’ Episode 5 ending explained: Why John Stewart kills Zoe and rejects Green Lantern power

Lanterns Episode 5, titled "Lights Out", delivers one of the biggest turning points of the season as John Stewart finally confronts Zoe, the Manhunter, and faces the choice he has been working towards for years. The episode also changes the relationship between John and Hal Jordan, while leaving the future of the Green Lantern ring uncertain.

The biggest reveal comes when John kills Zoe after using Hal as part of a trap. Zoe had already been exposed as the Manhunter, but Episode 5 gives her story a far more complicated ending. Her connection to John was genuine, even though she had been manipulating people around Rushville and protecting her own interests. She offers John a chance to survive and promises to heal him, but her condition is that he must help her keep the truth about the Manhunter hidden.

John ultimately refuses. He uses Hal as bait, waits for Zoe to arrive and shoots her. He then removes her heart, which provides evidence of her identity to the Guardians. The decision is especially significant because John had been romantically involved with Zoe and had personal reasons to trust her. Her death therefore becomes a deeply personal turning point rather than a simple victory over an enemy.

The episode then delivers its most important twist involving Hal's Green Lantern ring. After confronting Hal, John briefly takes the ring and becomes the person he has spent years believing he was destined to become. Instead of feeling triumphant, however, John feels empty.

That reaction explains why John eventually gives the ring back. His desire to become a Green Lantern has been shaped by his upbringing, the Guardians and his complicated relationship with Hal. Episode 5 forces him to consider whether the ring is actually something he wants or whether he has simply spent his life trying to satisfy expectations placed on him by other people.

Hal also reaches a breaking point during the episode. He continues to insist that the ring chose him and questions the Guardians' motives. His argument with John reflects a much deeper conflict between the two characters. With Lanterns continuing beyond Episode 5, the story can now shift towards those mysteries and the consequences of John's decision.

The ending also gives Aaron Pierre's John Stewart a major character moment. He kills someone he cared about, briefly receives the power he thought he wanted and then walks away from it. His decision suggests that John's journey is no longer about proving he deserves the Green Lantern ring. It is about deciding what kind of person he wants to become without allowing Hal, the Guardians or his own past to make that choice for him.
