Govt to scrap 60% vacant posts

The federal government has decided to abolish 60 per cent of regular government posts that have remained vacant for more than a year.

The Controller General of Accounts (CGA), in a letter issued to all accountants-general and relevant departments for implementation of the decision, made it clear that the measure was being taken in light of a federal cabinet decision and the relevant circular.

According to paragraph 6(i) of the Institutional Reforms Report, the Implementation Committee had recommended abolishing posts that had remained vacant for at least one year in order to reduce the size of the government and cut expenditure.

The letter stated that posts temporarily vacant due to transfers or postings would be excluded from the exercise. Posts reserved for promotion would also not be included.

It further stated that, in each cadre, posts to be abolished would first be counted against the quota for initial appointments and direct recruitment.

The CGA has directed all Accountant Generals Pakistan Revenues, provincial accountants-general, director-generals and chief accounts officers to review the vacancy rosters of their respective offices and process pending promotion cases in accordance with the revised rosters.
