Sebastian Stan addresses Marvel fans’ fears iver Bucky Barnes’ fate in 'Avengers: Doomsday'

Sebastian Stan has addressed Marvel fans’ growing fears over Bucky Barnes’ fate in Avengers: Doomsday, but the actor is keeping the character’s future firmly under wraps.

Stan, who has played Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011, was asked about the speculation surrounding his character and whether fans should be worried about what could happen to Bucky in the upcoming Avengers film.

“It’s always wonderful to see passion, you know, to whatever movies it is,” Stan said. “I guess we’ll also have to see, you know. It’s funny, isn’t it? We just have to kind of learn how to deal with uncertainty more than not.”

The actor added that while speculation is part of the fun of being a Marvel fan, audiences ultimately want the films to retain their element of surprise.

“It’s fun to speculate, but you want to be surprised, no?” Stan said.

His comments are unlikely to put an end to fan theories about Bucky’s fate. In fact, the uncertainty surrounding the character has become a major talking point as Avengers: Doomsday approaches, particularly given the film’s enormous cast and the stakes surrounding its multiverse storyline.

Bucky has been one of the MCU’s longest-running characters, first appearing as Steve Rogers’ childhood friend James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger. After being presumed dead, Bucky was transformed into the Winter Soldier, a highly trained assassin who was subjected to decades of brainwashing and used by Hydra.

His journey since then has centred heavily on redemption and rebuilding his identity. Bucky eventually broke free from Hydra’s control and became an ally of Steve Rogers and the Avengers. Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, he continued his efforts to move forward from his past, most notably in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Bucky later became a key member of the team introduced in Thunderbolts, placing him in an increasingly important position within the MCU. He is also among the confirmed cast members of Avengers: Doomsday, with the character positioned as the de facto leader of the New Avengers.

That development has only increased interest in whether Marvel could be preparing Bucky for a major role in the next phase of the story or, conversely, setting up an emotional ending for the character.

Fans have been particularly wary of Bucky’s fate because Avengers: Doomsday is expected to bring together an exceptionally large group of MCU characters alongside heroes from other Marvel universes. The film will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, while also bringing together characters connected to the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men.

Downey’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom has also added another layer of uncertainty. Rather than returning as Tony Stark, the actor is playing Victor von Doom, the film’s central villain, setting up a conflict that could put Bucky and the other heroes in serious danger.

Marvel has maintained a tight grip on information surrounding the film, with Stan previously acknowledging that the studio keeps major story details closely guarded. The actor is also reportedly among the cast members who were kept in the dark about certain major developments, including Downey’s Doctor Doom reveal.

For fans who have followed Bucky since The First Avenger, the concern goes beyond simply losing another superhero. The character has survived decades of manipulation, fought to regain control of his own life and gradually found a place among the heroes he once fought against. A permanent death would therefore represent a major conclusion to one of the MCU’s longest redemption arcs.

At the same time, there is currently no confirmation that Bucky dies in Avengers: Doomsday. Stan’s comments do not confirm or deny the fan theories, instead suggesting that audiences should embrace the uncertainty and wait for the story to unfold on screen.

Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, is scheduled to arrive exclusively in cinemas on December 18, 2026. The film is expected to serve as a major chapter in Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, with Avengers: Secret Wars following in December 2027.

Until then, Bucky Barnes’ fate remains one of the MCU’s biggest unanswered questions, and Stan appears to be in no hurry to provide the answer.
