Two sanitation workers die of suffocation

KARACHI:
Two sanitation workers died during treatment after they lost consciousness while working inside a sewer in the Old City area's Bhimpura, police saidon Thursday.
The incident occurred near Jamaat Khana in the Napier area. Citizens and Edhi volunteers pulled the men out of the sewer and shifted them to the Civil Hospital Trauma Centre. They were later moved to a private hospital in Saddar for further treatment, where both succumbed to their condition late Wednesday night.
The deceased were identified as 19-year-old Wani and 40-year-old Ramesh. Their bodies were shifted to a mortuary.
A relative, Amit, said the two deceased were brothers-in-law and residents of Lyari area. Ramesh was married and had two children. His parents owned a house in Punjab Chowrangi's Chandio village, while he lived with his wife and children in a rented house in Lyari.
The two men were privately employed at the Jamaat Khana and were working inside the sewer when they collapsed.
The Jamaat Khana administration held talks with the families following the deaths. A settlement letter was subsequently prepared and handed over to police, stating that the heirs did not wish to pursue legal action over the incident.
