K-P plans to recharge groundwater

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has prepared a comprehensive and major plan to improve the declining groundwater levels in the province and prevent water wastage.

Under the plan, water used at car wash stations and for domestic purposes will be recycled and made reusable. It has also been decided to make the installation of rainwater storage systems mandatory in new development projects.

According to official documents, more than 4.5 million liters of rainwater have so far been successfully recharged into the groundwater system across the province.

Data on sites for rainwater storage has been collected from all 37 districts of the province, and a total of 62 locations have been identified to help improve groundwater levels. Of these 62 projects, 54 have been completed, while work is progressing rapidly at four sites.

A total of 52 recharge wells have been established to channel rainwater directly into the groundwater, of which 49 wells have been made fully operational.

Government sources say the project will not only help improve groundwater levels but will also provide significant assistance in dealing with potential water shortages in the future.
