Brendan Fraser confirms ‘The Mummy 4’ has finally started filming

Brendan Fraser has finally given fans the update they have been waiting years to hear. The Mummy 4 has moved into production, with Fraser returning as adventurer Rick O’Connell for the next chapter of the beloved franchise.

Fraser revealed the news during his appearance at the Festival du Cinéma Américain de Deauville, where he received the Deauville Talent Award. Speaking to CANAL+ during the festival, the actor indicated that he had to leave Deauville because he was due back at work on Monday morning. His comments effectively confirmed that filming for the new Mummy movie was beginning at the start of this week.

The announcement brings the project a significant step closer to the big screen after years of speculation surrounding Fraser’s return. The actor first played Rick O’Connell in the 1999 adventure film The Mummy, before reprising the role in The Mummy Returns in 2001 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.

The upcoming film reunites Fraser with Rachel Weisz, who will once again play Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell. Fraser and Weisz last appeared together as Rick and Evelyn in The Mummy Returns. Weisz did not return for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, with Maria Bello taking over the role of Evelyn in that film.

John Hannah is also returning as Jonathan Carnahan, while Oded Fehr will reprise his role as Ardeth Bay. Kevin J. O’Connor is also back as Beni Gabor, despite Beni apparently meeting his end in the original 1999 film. The return of the character adds an intriguing mystery to a project whose plot details remain closely guarded.

The sequel is being directed by Matt Bettinelli Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the filmmaking duo behind Scream VI, Abigail and Ready or Not. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay. Universal has not revealed the full story, although the returning cast has already established a strong connection with the original Fraser led films.

Fraser, now 57, has also acknowledged that returning to the physically demanding role will require a different approach to action sequences. At Deauville, he joked about relying on the stunt team rather than attempting every demanding sequence himself. He also described returning to Rick as feeling like reconnecting with an old friend, reflecting his enthusiasm for stepping back into one of his most recognisable roles.

The actor has previously spoken about waiting for years for another opportunity to play Rick O’Connell. Earlier this year, Fraser said he had been waiting for the right call for two decades and described the forthcoming movie as the Mummy film he had always wanted to make.

Universal currently has the untitled fourth Mummy film scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 15, 2027. The studio lists it as part of its upcoming theatrical slate, meaning audiences now have a confirmed date for the return of Fraser, Weisz and the franchise’s familiar characters.
