Body formed to address traffic woes

FAISALABAD:

Commissioner Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh has constituted a special committee to devise a sustainable and comprehensive solution to traffic congestion and parking problems on Canal Road, particularly around Lyallpur Galleria on East Canal Service Road. The committee, headed by Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA) Director General Muhammad Asif Chaudhry, was formed following concerns over traffic congestion, haphazard parking and road safety in the area.

According to Rescue 1122, more than 1,250 accidents have been reported over the past two years, with the emergency service attributing the incidents to factors including illegal service-road ramps and unnecessary U-turns allegedly constructed due to political intervention. The committee comprises the Chief Traffic Officer, Chief Officer of the Municipal Corporation and the head of administration of Lyallpur Galleria.

The commissioner announced the committee while presiding over a meeting attended by FDA Director General Muhammad Asif Chaudhry, Chief Engineer Mehar Ayub, Chief Traffic Officer Rana Nasir Javed, Municipal Corporation Chief Officer Usman Ghani, Lyallpur Galleria Administrator Sohail Khattak and other relevant officers and representatives.

The meeting reviewed traffic congestion on East Canal Service Road, particularly around Lyallpur Galleria, as well as disorganised parking and difficulties faced by commuters and residents.

Officials from relevant departments briefed the meeting on various proposals concerning traffic management, road engineering and parking arrangements.

Dr Sheikh stressed the need for integrated and scientifically planned measures to ensure a sustainable solution to traffic congestion and improve the movement of vehicles.
