Rawal Dam spillways opened as heavy rain pushes water level to 1,751 feet

Dist admin urges citizens to stay away from streams, drainage channels and low-lying areas till spillways remain open

The Islamabad district administration on Tuesday opened the Rawal Dam spillways after the water rose to over 1750 feet following heavy downpour lashing the federal capital and adjoining areas.

According to authorities, the water level at Rawal Dam had risen to 1,751.90 feet, prompting authorities to open the dam’s spillways at 2pm.

The district administration also directed Punjab Emergency Service Rescue 1122, police, and other relevant departments to remain vigilant during the operation.

The district administration said authorities decided to open the spillways to regulate the water inflow and maintain safe water levels.

It also directed all concerned institutions to implement necessary safety measures before and during the operation.

Officials said coordination among emergency and civic agencies was underway to monitor the situation and respond promptly to any developments resulting from increased water discharge.

The district administration urged residents to stay away from streams, drainage channels and low-lying areas while the spillways remain open. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary visits to locations near watercourses and to follow instructions issued by local authorities.

The administration said precautionary arrangements were being made to minimise risks associated with the move, and monitoring teams would continue to observe water levels and conditions around the dam throughout the operation.
