PPP to reject calls for new provinces in Sindh Assembly

Pakistan Peoples Party Sindh President Nisar Khuhro on Sunday said the Povincial Assembly would pass a resolution against the creation of new provinces and administrative units after a debate on an adjournment motion and a decision based on the majority view of the house.

In a statement, Khuhro said the debate would put on record who was seeking to "divide Sindh" and expose them before the people of Sindh.

Responding to criticism that debating the adjournment motion would provide supporters of new provinces an opportunity to present their case, he said they would have been able to speak even if a resolution had been moved directly.

"PPP representatives from Kashmore to Karachi will reject demands and proposals for new provinces and administrative units on the constitutional forum with a strong stance," he said. Those supporting new provinces, he added, would be exposed before the public through the proceedings.

Khuhro said the PPP had already secured five resolutions against new provinces in the past, but demands for new provinces continued to surface.

"If the demand grows tomorrow for a referendum on new provinces and administrative units, will the decision then be made at public rallies?" he asked.

He said the constitutional course was for the assembly to take a decision on the issue through a majority vote, reiterating that the PPP had consistently opposed any division of Sindh.
