Maggie Smith’s $21 million fortune revealed after her death

Maggie Smith’s sons inherited her $21 million estate, including the farmhouse where the late actress raised her family

Nearly two years after Maggie Smith’s death, new probate records have revealed details of the actress’s $21 million estate and who inherited it.

According to probate records obtained by E! News, Smith’s sons, actors Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, inherited an estate valued at £15,977,325, approximately $21 million. The figure reflects the value remaining after debts and expenses of slightly more than £25,000 were deducted.

Smith’s estate included Douglas Lake Farm, the rural property where the Harry Potter and Downton Abbey actress lived for around 40 years while raising her children. The property features a five-bedroom house, barns, a stable and a vineyard.

Smith’s will was signed in September 1998, around 18 months before the death of her second husband, playwright Beverley Cross. Under the document, certain copyright, royalty and unpublished-work interests were to be handled separately. The proceeds were to be divided equally between her two sons and Cross’ children, Philippa Maughan and Shaun Cross.

Smith died on Sept. 27, 2024, at the age of 89. She was survived by Larkin and Stephens, who both followed their mother into acting.

Following her death, Stephens spoke publicly about the difficulty of watching his mother’s health decline during her final days. He also reflected on the widespread public response to her death and the admiration she received throughout her career.

Smith was known for major roles across film, television and theatre. Her credits included Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise and Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, in Downton Abbey.

After her death, several of her former co-stars paid tribute to her, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Kristin Scott Thomas.
