Peter Cullen dies at 85 as the voice behind Optimus Prime leaves ‘Transformers’ fans devastated

Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor who gave Optimus Prime his unmistakable baritone in Transformers, has died at the age of 85. Cullen died on August 26 at his home in Los Angeles, according to his agent Kevin Motley and his family. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

His family confirmed that Cullen died peacefully surrounded by loved ones and asked fans to honour his memory by following the qualities that became closely associated with his most famous character. The family urged people to serve their communities and lead with compassion, integrity and loyalty, while remembering the message, "be strong enough to be gentle".

Cullen first became the voice of Optimus Prime when the original Transformers animated series debuted in 1984. His performance helped establish the Autobot leader as a calm, authoritative and compassionate figure, giving the character a distinctive presence that remained recognisable across generations.

The voice itself had a deeply personal inspiration. Before Cullen auditioned for Optimus Prime, his older brother Larry, a US Marine Corps veteran who had served in Vietnam, encouraged him to approach the character as a genuine hero rather than a loud or exaggerated Hollywood figure. Cullen later explained that he drew inspiration from his brother when developing Optimus Prime's voice and personality.

Cullen continued to voice Optimus Prime when the franchise moved from television into major Hollywood productions. He returned for the live action Transformers film in 2007 and subsequently appeared as the character across several films, including Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Transformers: The Last Knight, Bumblebee and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023.

Although Optimus Prime became Cullen's defining role, his career extended across television, film, animation and video games. He was also widely recognised as the voice of Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, beginning with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and continuing across later productions.

His other credits included Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, KARR in Knight Rider, and characters in The Smurfs, G.I. Joe and other animated productions. Cullen also provided vocal effects for the creature in Predator, creating its distinctive clicking sounds.

Cullen's contribution to voice acting was formally recognised in 2023 when he received a lifetime achievement award at the Children's & Family Emmy Awards. He had also received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his work as Optimus Prime.

Hasbro also paid tribute to Cullen, describing his career as spanning six decades and crediting him with helping millions of people understand Optimus Prime through ideas of courage, sacrifice and leadership.
